When to visit a national park (and when not to)

Almost every bad national park trip comes down to one mistake: going at the wrong time of year for that specific park. The same month that is perfect for a desert park is dangerous, and the month that is perfect for a high mountain park has snow on the road.

Three things decide the answer — latitude, elevation, and whether the park is wet or dry.

High country runs on snowmelt, not the calendar

Mountain parks open from the bottom up. Low trails clear in spring while high passes stay closed into July, and some roads never open before midsummer.

If your plan depends on a specific high road or pass, check its status before booking anything else. Every other decision hangs off that one.

Desert parks invert the normal season

In desert parks, summer is the off season for good reason: midday heat regularly reaches genuinely dangerous levels and shade does not exist. Spring and autumn are the real seasons, and winter is pleasant by day.

Hike at first light and be done by mid-morning in warm months.
Carry more water than you think you need, and never plan on finding it.

Far-north parks have a very short window

Alaskan and other high-latitude parks are effectively a ten-week destination. Outside roughly mid-June to late August, most roads, campgrounds, shuttles, and visitor services are closed, and getting in often means a small flight or a boat that weather can cancel at short notice.

Build slack into any far-north trip for exactly that reason. A single weathered-out flight day is normal, not bad luck, and a schedule with no spare day turns it into a lost trip.

Shoulder season is usually the right answer

The weeks either side of peak give you most of the access with a fraction of the crowds, and both campsite and permit competition drop sharply. Late May and September are the classic windows for mountain parks; March and November for desert ones.

The trade is real: shorter days, some closed facilities, and a genuine chance of weather that cancels your plan. In exchange you get parking at trailheads, campsites that are actually available, and photographs without a queue in them.

Check whether the shuttle, road, or visitor centre you need is still running that week.
